New Surgical Techniques and New Lens Implants
This is an exciting time for cataract surgery, as new lens implants are being developed to provide good vision at both distance and near. "Multifocal" implants allow focus at many different points, and "Toric" implants correct for astigmatism. Also, the new LenSx laser allows blade-free cataract surgery with better astigmatism results and faster healing
Dr. Haight has been performing cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants since 2002, initially with the AMO Array type lens. However, new lenses from Alcon (ReSTOR), AMO (ReZOOM), and Abbott (Tecnis Multifocal) promise to be even better at providing simultaneous distance and near vision. Additionally, a new lens implant from Eyeonics (Crystalens) is now available which changes focus in the eye much like the natural lens does when you are young- an exciting new concept. Some patients are having cataract surgery now even with little or no cataract, just to obtain the benefits of simultaneous distance and near vision. Most of these patients require glasses for some tasks, but get by most of the time with no glasses. New "Toric" lens implants correct for astigmatism, so they give sharper vision at near and distance.
Medicare has recently decided to allow seniors to get these new types of lens implants with cataract surgery, and pay the additional cost out of pocket. We can provide information on how you can take advantage of this exciting new technology- you can restore youthful vision fast, and experience the amazing vision these implants provide for the rest of your life.
